First Birthday Photo Shoot Ideas

Milestone Sessions

First birthdays are a magical milestone and worth celebrating in a way that truly reflects your little one’s personality. I love a good cake smash, but there are other ways that we can celebrate too. So this little blog is all about ideas and alternatives to the popular cake smash sessions we have seen over recent years.

1. Balloon Photography Party

Just Balloons

Theme: A burst of colour with a backdrop of balloons. You choose the colours that you want and we create the set.

Props & Setup: High balloon arch or scattered helium-filled balloons in your choice of colours.

Why it works: Balloons are timeless props—shade, shape, movement, and fun. Babies love interacting and looking up in wonder.

I’ve yet to meet a one-year-old who isn’t completely captivated by balloons! In fact, half the challenge is getting them to sit still as they’re usually far too busy chasing after them. But honestly, that’s part of the magic. These playful moments are exactly what I love to capture—the joy, the curiosity, and the beautifully natural way they explore the world at this age.

2. Teddy Bear Tea Party

I’ve yet to meet a one-year-old who doesn’t light up at the sight of their favourite cuddly toy. Set them down with a few teddy bears, tiny teacups, and a cosy blanket, and suddenly you’ve got a little picnic full of personality. They’ll cuddle, explore, rearrange—and sometimes attempt to feed their furry friends! It’s these gentle, imaginative moments I love most to capture—the innocence of play and the quiet joy of simply being one.

The beauty of these sessions is that they can quite easily be taken outdoors, which is another option.

Theme: A whimsical gathering with beloved teddy bears, tiny cups, saucers, and miniature treats
Props & Setup: Wooden toys, floral tablecloth, garden blooms, pastel teacups
Why it works: This setup encourages social interaction—even with toys—while producing dreamy, storybook-like images.

3. Bubbles & Bonanza

Theme: Magical bubbles filling the frame as they float and pop
Props & Setup: Bubble machine or gentle wand. Option of a bubble bath.
Why it works: Bubbles encourage wonder and movement, producing lively interactions and magical sparkle.

4. NEW for 2025 – Ball Pit Mania

There’s something about a ball pit that brings out pure, unfiltered joy. Whether they’re learning to throw, or peeking out with a cheeky grin, little ones absolutely light up in this setup. It’s bright, it’s fun, and best of all—it keeps them happily busy while I capture all those wonderful, expressive moments. Ball Pit Mania is perfect for high-energy toddlers and guaranteed to bring a pop of colour and personality to their first birthday shoot.

5. Simple Portraits

If a cake smash isn’t your style, simple portrait sessions are a timeless alternative. These focus purely on your little one’s personality—capturing their expressions, curiosity, and joy in a clean, natural setting. With minimal props and soft lighting, these portraits create beautiful, lasting memories of your baby just as they are at this special milestone.

Theme: Recreate a photo of you and your baby—matching outfits, gestures, or expressions
Props & Setup: Mirror, vintage armchair, family heirlooms, simple backdrop
Why it works: Generational bonds are beautifully highlighted, and these portraits become treasured keepsakes for years to come.

Why Choose a Non–Cake-Splash Session?

  • Personal Touch: These ideas highlight connection and personality—not just sugar-coated fun.
  • Mess-Free: Great if you dislike chaotic, sugary setups or have allergies to consider.
  • Extended Use: Beyond birthday invitations—you’ll adore the versatility in wall art, keepsakes, thank-you cards.

Planning Tips for First Birthday Shoots

  1. Time it Right: Aim for mid-morning sessions, after nap time—tired babies and low light don’t mix!
  2. Keep Props Minimal: One or two core elements per theme keeps the focus on your baby.
  3. Bring Backup: Extra outfits, snacks & drinks, toys.
  4. Let It Flow: Some of my favourites come from unplanned giggles, yawns, and curious exploration.
  5. Family Involvement: Mums, dads, siblings—these interactions are the heart of your family story.
